• Luxor Temple was the main venue for one of the most important ancient Egyptian religious celebrations, when the cult images of Amun, his wife Mut, and their son, the lunar god Khonsu, were taken from their temples in Karnak and transported in a grand procession to Luxor Temple to visit the god Amenemopet, who lives there. This was the Opet Festival.

The descriptions on the walls include the myth of Horus and Seth (probably performed annually as a religious drama).

Known as tekhen in ancient Egyptian, they are built of a single piece of stone with a rectangular shaft and topped by a gilded pyramidion to reflect the sun's rays.
• Obelisks are related to solar mythology, signifying the benben, or first land that appeared at the beginning of time and from which the sun-god created the cosmos. Egyptian monarchs enjoyed having obelisks built and dedicated to themselves, with their names and religious dedications carved into the four sides of the shaft.
